The Shira Route begins from the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, starting at a higher altitude. This route crosses the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful and remote areas of the mountain. It offers good time for acclimatization and connects with the Machame Route later on. This climb is suited for hikers with some experience at high elevations and includes a gradual approach to the summit.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Drive to the trailhead and start trekking across the plateau with views of the mountain ahead.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Shira 1 Camp
Day 2: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Walk through moorland as the trail slowly climbs. Take time to adjust to the altitude.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Shira 2 Camp
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower (4,600m)
Trek up to Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp. Helps with acclimatization.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Overnight at Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Climb the Barranco Wall, then hike to Karanga Valley.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Karanga Camp
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Continue up to the final base camp. Rest and prepare for the summit climb.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Overnight at Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Start the summit push around midnight. Reach the top at sunrise, then descend.
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Overnight at Mweka Camp
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Walk down through the forest. Receive your summit certificate.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Drive back to your hotel
