The Machame Route is one of the most popular trails up Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a well-paced climb with excellent opportunities for acclimatization. The route is challenging but very rewarding, passing through different climate zones from rainforest to high alpine desert. Over 7 days, you’ll make a steady ascent and descend via a different path, giving you varied views and terrain. All overnights are in tents, and our team takes care of setup, meals, and guidance.
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
Begin the climb through dense rainforest with plenty of birdlife and monkeys.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight at Machame Camp
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Continue through moorland with views of Shira Plateau. The air gets cooler as you gain altitude.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Shira Camp
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Gain altitude up to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Overnight at Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall and trek across valleys. A shorter but important day for acclimatization.

Overnight at Karanga Camp
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Head to the final base camp before summit night. Rest early for the next day’s challenge.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Overnight at Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Start your summit push around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
Overnight at Mweka Camp
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
Final descent through the rainforest. Pick up your certificate and transfer to Arusha.
