The Marangu Route is the oldest and most popular trail to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its comfortable hut accommodations, this route provides a steady climb with well-established paths. It’s often chosen by first-time climbers looking for a shorter route with less camping. Over 6 days, you’ll hike through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching the snowy peak of Uhuru at 5,895 meters.
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
After registration at the gate, start your hike through lush rainforest. Spot monkeys and colorful birds along the way.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Trek through the moorland zone with open views of Mount Mawenzi. Gradual ascent helps with acclimatization.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight at Horombo Hut
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or rest at the camp. This extra day boosts your chances of reaching the summit.
Overnight at Horombo Hut
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Climb through alpine desert. The air gets thinner, so walk slowly and stay hydrated.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight at Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut
Start the summit attempt just after midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Horombo for rest.
