The Rongai Route is the only trail that starts from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. It offers a quiet and dry trail with gradual slopes, making it a great choice for those who prefer a steady climb. This route gives you a different view of the mountain and has a good chance of seeing wildlife in the early stages. After reaching the summit, the descent is along the Marangu Route, allowing you to experience both sides of the mountain.
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,625m)
Start your hike through the forest and open moorlands.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Simba Camp
Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave (3,450m)
Walk through open terrain with views of the plains and Mawenzi Peak.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Overnight at Second Cave
Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Continue across heathland toward the base of Mawenzi.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Overnight at Kikelewa Camp
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Short but steep climb to a campsite near a mountain lake.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Rest and prepare for the summit.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Overnight at Kibo Hut
Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Start at midnight for the final climb. Reach the summit at sunrise, then descend.
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Overnight at Horombo Hut
Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate (1,800m)
Walk down through moorland and forest. Receive your summit certificate.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Transfer back to your hotel
